The olive has been growing for more than 8,000 years and the importance
of olives and the oil it produces has become a main staple in both the Mediterranean
and U.S. diets. The healthy properties of olive oil are being recognized
by consumers around the globe. Beyond its rich flavor, this “liquid
gold’s” health benefits include the ability to fight ailments
such as bad cholesterol, reducing hypertension, and contains potent cancer
fighting
properties.
The Arbequian Variety that Gretchen Mooney has planted is one of the primary varieties of Spain. Due to its low vigor, and high yields, it has been shown to be the best variety to date for high density, machine harvested plantings. The Arbequina Olive bears small fruit with a high oil content. This variety is excellent in flavor and has a fruity aroma, favored by chef’s for its ability to be blended in food dishes yet can also stand alone.
Olives require very warm average temperatures, and cannot tolerate extreme cold. They do well in very dry climates, not surprisingly they grow beautifully in the Mediterranean climate, with its mild winters and long hot summers. Since Butte County is on the same latitude as the Mediterranean, and has very similar climate patterns, this type of crop is a perfect fit for both our company and the location of our family orchards.
